So! Azh has had a Minecraft server up and going on more than one occasion, but he really likes running mods as well. I'm more of a vanilla player. Lately he and I have been jumping on and working on a new home, and as the idea was brought up in chat, there's a good chance I'll be starting our own server again. All I'd like before taking the plunge is a little assurance that people will actually PLAY. If there's anyone in support of this idea, post here to let me know and depending on who says what, we can get our own little world going!

Kor Edit: Hijacking this so that it's at the top. The server address for the one we're playing on right now is

Vanilla.GenMC.net

I'm in. So is my boyfriend.

We could look into just doing a realm, maybe? Instead of a server. That way no one has to maintenance it. And I'm not sure if you can pay for them via paypal, but if so, we could set up a paypal to pay that every month, and people have to put money into it to keep it up and running, maybe? Worth a look into, I think.

I tried operating my tower and the board started to spark and smoke. I'm not gonna be able to use it :/ the MB just couldn't take it. I'll have to order a new tower entirely dedicated to running server.

The issue with Realms is that it's purely vanilla. For the sake of convenience, some plugins are nice to have, such as setting a home, zoning areas that you claim as your own, teleporting to other players, spawn protection, things of that nature.

You can get around some things with the use of command blocks, but it can be a lot more limiting than using a simple plugin that'll do the job five times quicker with one tenth of the effort.

I tried out Realms (had a free trial available) and it's decent. It's a stable thing, but it does lack in the areas of proper server management to keep it idiot-proof. Additionally, Realms only takes credit card payments. Doesn't take PayPal, so I'd have to link one of my cards to the account, separate to the site's payment options, and transfer a portion of the donations to my own account each month (presuming that it was to be site-funded).

I get that people don't really like mods as much as I do, but some of the plugins are a general quality of life improvement, and can help keep people interested and motivated in the game.

That's my take on it, at least.

Edit: One more thing, realms are invite-based. So you have to send someone an invite for them to join it, rather than the user inputting a server address and clicking Join. They'd have to be approved by an operator or admin.

That is one of the issues with running things on Realms .3. I'm looking to build my own server tower and run it solely for a Minecraft server so we won't have to pay, since I know how to port forward and open a server up for you guys I just need the machine to run it smoothly with a large number of people on. So far it doesn't seem to exceed 400 dollars for a decent home rigged server from fresh parts AND I can probably make it even cheaper.

For the time being, we're just on a public server right now. There's no need to throw exorbitant amounts of money at a server when we don't even know what broader public interest there is right now.

If anyone would like to join, the server we're on is Vanilla.GenMC.net

Hopping on :3 And even if it's not for MC It might be fun running a server myself for any other game

Good points, Kor. I didn't know much about realms. I've also never played on a big server like this, so I didn't know about all of these claim blocks etc etc. They are really nice additions. And this server isn't as fucked as I thought it sounded. (Helps that you guys found a good spot first, though. :p ) So I think this is a good option for now, unless a bunch of people seem to be long term interested. :D

Might be fun to do, but I've never done anything on minecraft. D:

Most I've done is hangout on GMod and fail at trying to make the NOD defense turret from Command & Conquer. Motivation and persistence in sandbox games can be kinda hard for me. >.<

Boxymoron is my connection name.
I must say, there is not nearly enough nudity in life.

This seems like the most feasible option for now. Azh and I have a pretty stable operation going on in there at the moment, and it could be fun to make our own sort of FW village in the area we've started. Come join us!
