Title: Argon, the knight
Post by: Argon on October 12, 2010, 04:33:08 AM
Argon came into this world an orphan, his father dead from plague, and his mother from birthing him. The attending midwife left him in the care of a church orphanage in the Western Kingdom, where he would live until he turned fifteen. His life in the orphanage was much like that of other orphans, eating what food there was to be had, playing with the children he got along with, and doing his best to obey the rules he was taught. Thanks to his obedience, the attending priests favored him with lessons in reading and writing. Around the age of ten he started standing up to the orphanage bullies and protecting the smaller children. He did his best to keep them out of harm's way, but he couldn't always protect them all. He took his share of beatings as well, but he never gave up.

At fifteen he was a man grown, and the orphanage could no longer give him shelter. He had no desire to pursue life as a priest, though he was very grateful for their care. For some months, he was forced to live on the streets, foraging for food in the woods, or bargaining work for sustenance at the farms and markets. He managed to find a home with a travelling merchant and his small caravan as a laborer. He stayed with this merchant for two years, and learned what he could about trade and deal making. He fully expected to become a merchant himself once he had saved up enough coin, but life took him down another path.

The caravan had stopped in the city of Featherfang, as it had many times before, the difference was that this time there had been an attack in the south by the lizard tribes, and a war was on the horizon. Argon had never thought of joining the army, but when he learned about the merciless slaughtering of the priests and nuns, and even the orphans they sheltered, he could not sit idle.

Argon enlisted into Lysander's regular army at the age of seventeen to fight against the lizard tribes. The campaign lasted for five years, ending with the United Kingdom victorious over the tribes. Argon himself played a key role in their triumph, slaying the maniacal tribal leader in single combat. Upon his return from that battle, it was said that he and his sword were covered in the green-tinted blood of the lizards. He sustained heavy wounds himself, but within a few weeks time he had fully physically recovered; those who knew him well, however, knew that part of the wolf who went into that war never came back.

For his great deeds and valor in the field, Argon was knighted by Lysander, King of the Western Realms. He was titled the Emerald Knight for the prize he handed to his king, the dark green head of the lizard tribes' leader. Argon was made the commander of all Lysander's forces, answerable only to the king himself. The appointment upset some of the nobility, but a compromise was made. Though Argon was granted a military title and important duties, he was not given any lands, an effectively is not a noble (though only nobles with a death wish would say that to his face). He still holds power and can enforce the laws, so the court does not risk his wroth by trying to insult him.

During the time of the civil conflict known as the War of Divided Kingdoms, Argon once again stepped into the forefront of history. The conflict started over the proper succession of the crown, due to the mysterious circumstances surrounding the death of Leonus the 3rd. The eastern realm fervently supported Leonus the 4th as the true heir, following the tradition of succession. Lysander, the brother of Leonus the 3rd had reason to believe that his brother was the victim of foul play, possibly by the hand of his nephew. He would need more proof to take away his nephew's birthright, however, and finding such proof would be nearly impossible. It seemed the only option before the king of the west was war.
