Though it doesn't happen in the states nearly as much as else where, we all know someone somewhere that may be affected by a growing issue that is defined as "Censoring" of the internet.
You've probably heard it from someone when you give them a link to youtube, and find out that they cannot view this within the country.
Licensing being the big reason in many cases, the others being wide and vibrant from country to country.
How has this affected you? What do you think must be done? And How do you think it should be dealt with?
Discussion thread....go!
I think we should gather our Pitch forks and torches and have a good old fashion angry Mob, we'll chase the censorship right out here =D
I just don't think that the web should be limited to certain countries. It drives me crazy, the internet used to be completely global with no prejudice but now this licensing thing is bullshit.
-Tears roll down his eyes and his sides begin to develop a dull ache-
Really!? Really?
I live in China. 90% of the English speaking world is censored here. Hell! Even my text messages to friends at home get censored.
If I go onto Google, right now, and type is "Freedom" or "Democracy," my entire internet access through my IP becomes blocked for roughly ten minutes.
Yeah, China does not fuck around.
It used to be that whenever news sites like "The Guardian," and "New York Times," ran any stories about China and put them on the front page, the entire website would be blocked until that content was moved elsewhere. Now they've gotten past showing it on the homepage, but it's still blocked if I try to access the article.
Yes Canada has this weird law idea. Yes it's illegal to watch certain videos online. For some reason Adult Swim videos are blocked here as well.
All the same, it's no where near what it's like here and certainly never will be. The difference is people in every other country in this world have no problem standing up for their rights. Here, everything is so carefully monitored from phone calls and texts to website traffic and more. If someone so much as accidentally clicks a link to something anti-government here, their IP goes on file as a know suspect. Should something attempt to arise, everyone in that household become liable and tossed in jail or worse. It happens everyday here. Even people that speak out about such horrific acts are silenced abruptly as well! Fuck, if I wasn't typing this through a secure VPN right now, I'd likely get my access banned or at least I could certainly get this website blocked in China.
I'm sorry for coming off like such a jerk, but you guys really have no idea how bad it can get and is here. It's even worse in North Korea where instead of a blocked list of websites, they have an open list a hell of a lot shorter.
I can understand why a government would want to maintain better control of the content that is being seen in their country. With all the hate groups in the U.S. alone, it's good to know who the bad guys are and what they plan on doing. If you don't believe me, check out this link http://www.splcenter.org/ It's all the info you could want and more about who hates who in America. With better monitoring of internet users, groups like spl would have less to do. See that lead article about the Latino nearly beaten to death by a cop? If they had discovered those cops who write out their hatred of Latinos online, they could have pressured them into counseling to deal with the issue instead of getting cops fired and a having to pay out a lawsuit to this guy.
Still, censoring meanwhile is pretty bad for this country as it only seems to make things worse. I hear it all the time from Chinese nationals that they not only hate their government, but they want to destroy it or replace it with something else thinking the U.S. government is so much better. Whatever they believe, it's mostly from word of mouth or whatever their allowed to hear. Of course they know just as well as I do of the shit that goes down here, but what they don't know is about the world outside of this place due to censorship. They make up their concepts based on movies and tv really. Episodes of Friends and Spider-man films. (They aren't too big on Potter)
All the same. Again, sorry to come off as a jerk, I just haven't had a chance to vent about this for a while. Everyone I know here already knows plenty about this from their own experiences. It's pretty bad. I'll feel better when I'm home. In the meantime, don't worry that your internet is going to one day vanish on you. It won't. People in your countries don't disappear in labor camps for standing up for their rights.
I've heard of the crimes that China has done with the people that reside within that country. :( My prayers are out to you Nester.
