Title: Site Updates
Post by: Azhtek on September 16, 2010, 10:08:59 AM
Every now and then, I'll add something to the site. It might be a minor tweak that you'll never use, or the next big thing (unlikely). In any case, all updates to the site, big or small, added or removed, will be noted here for reference.

Added/updated the Gallery (http://www.furry-within.com/index.php?action=media). This functions, as you might imagine, as an image gallery, but audio, video and text can also be hosted. As well as that, this modification allows video links from more sites I can be bothered to link. To do this, you simply provide a plain link to the video in question.

For example. Say I wanted to link a YouTube video I liked. I would post the link as, [noembed]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iQcwY22DA4k[/noembed]. This would automatically embed as the following without any need for tags:

Honor Kills (wow machinima) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iQcwY22DA4k#ws)

Simple. Any questions regarding modifications listed, post them here and I'll try to answer them to the best of my ability.

Tinyportal is functional, but not yet optimal.

Tinyportal, as you may have seen upon coming to the site's front page, is a portal modification that allows the display of information such as the most recent posts, articles, and other assorted information blocks on the sides of the site, which show you some of your stats, who's online, recent posts, and other tidbits.

Right now I'm in the process of setting it up and we'll see if it works out. Tell me what you think about this one, please, since I am unsure if people like coming to a front page and seeing a forum, or something more.

I think the new layout is cool looking. thanks for the changes.

I'm thinking if it were at all possible, have the main Tinyportal display only show forum threads from important sections like the Furry Within Information area only. Although I like how it does show the Introductions forum too-- it's neat to see who's joining, but there's th e possibility that important announcements will just be buried.

Yeah, it chose some boards at random, but as I said I'll be screwing around with it in the future to show more important and relevant information.

Now that is a brilliant way of making life easier for all of us that wish to embed a link, no hassle of using the tags or running the risk of a typo rendering the embedding to nothing more than a line of text.

Bit of an error going on with the gallery. Users can upload things, but can't view any submissions. I'll try to iron it out.

You may have noticed the Tinyportal has been removed. Mostly for some scripting issues I was having, really. I've also taken down the gallery, because that thing was broken since day one of installing it. I'll attempt to either repair it or replace it in the very near future.

Tinyportal, we'll see if I need that again. It didn't serve much purpose other than being a place to shove a Ventrilo chat status box, the generated script for which was normally fucked.

Due to an increase in bot activity around the site, for the protection of users, I've installed reCAPTCHA on the registration page. If you aren't familiar with this system's name, you'll be familiar with its looks. Anyway, hopefully this helps keep the bots away. If it gives anyone you know trouble, let me know here or in PM, or have them email me.

definitely a good safety measure Azh, I was slightly surprised that there wasnt already one built into the registration process, then again it does seem redundant unless the site is being targeted by bots on a semi-regular basis.

There is one that comes with SMF by default, but it's rather weak.
Title: Re: Site Updates

So, the gallery is just about bust. I can't get the damn thing to work no matter how hard I try. I can install a third party system, such as Coppermine, but then it'll be detached from the site. You won't need to register again, I can bridge the databases, but you'll leave FW's forums for the gallery. I'll let some user feedback regarding that issue come back to me before I put in the effort.

Next, I've added a couple more boards. Hold your gasps, please.

They're in the gaming area. They're three new boards covering some games. One is MtG, another is MMOs, and another is Tabletop games. As is, I've installed a mod that allows for the creation of MtG decks. The others are kind of just floating there at the moment, but you can post in them to organise events. I'm looking to expand the user interests of FW a little, if that's the correct term to be using.

A number of people are already using the free MtG engine on GamesiPlay to great effect, and I figure, why not allow them a place within their own community to share decks, strategies, and so on?

The MMO board is mostly to organise things. I'd love to see another attempt at an FW guild on WoW, or another MMO if people are interested. (First attempt didn't work out so well due to organisational issues.)

Tabletop, I'm not that sure what I'm doing with that. I'm scouting around for a mod that would allow the creation of army listings with icons, similar to what the MtG mod does. I'll post more later.

Anyway, questions regarding the individual boards and their functions can go into the boards themselves, and questions regarding broader things can be posted here or PM'd to me.

Just so you know, there's a mod you can get that allows forum dice rolling.  Might be useful if anyone wants to set up a game in your tabletop section.

As for the gallery, I'd kind of like one (as long as it won't cost anything), I'm a strong supporter of free awesomeness.  If it costs money then I'm kind of "meh" about the gallery.

Honestly, Azh, I'm inclined to say "Fuck the gallery."  It's just been a gigantic headache for you, and although I applaud your herculean efforts, I think it's time to give it a rest.  You've done your duty, so you can let it go if you want to. :P

And yayyyy a tabletop games forum!  Argon will be pleased. :P

Getting a little bored. I'll be fucking around with the site a little and trying to add some new features. The first of which right now is a Google+ at the start of threads, still messing with it because +1'ing a page shows it as "Login" on the Google+ site, because access is blocked to people who aren't logged in. Anyone looked around Google+ yet? Interesting take on social networks.

Anyway. For those who still check the forums, I'll be adding, removing and changing features in hopes of finding some things worth keeping.

I've also just now managed to get a gallery working on the site. It's not the software that I was aiming for, but it's close enough. It's a fairly basic setup, but you can start immediately uploading from the "Gallery" button at the top of the page. I'll add more categories shortly.
Title: Some Bigger Updates. Please Read!
Post by: Azhtek on January 13, 2012, 11:48:08 AM
So, some of you may have noticed some changes to the site. Again.

Basically it works out like this. The forums are exactly the same, there's just a little bit more information floating around the sides. The front page better displays what is available to users.

I'll be adding and subtracting from this as time goes on, trying to find a balance on modules that we need or want.

If you do not want to see these items on the sides of the site, then you may notice two small (http://www.furry-within.com/Themes/default/images/tinyportal/TPupshrink.gif) symbols together. If you click on these, they will hide the wings on the site, and you can continue with business as usual. Unclicking them reverses this.

Additionally, I have added a donations section to the site, and have created a PayPal account just for FW.
Currently, the site is approaching $70 US in running costs per month. This covers the VPN (where the site is hosted) and Ventrilo (which I am urging more people to use).
I'm against the idea of commercial advertisements littering the site. Not only do I think they break up the general flow of the page, they can be off-putting and make the site significantly more NSFW.
If you wish to show your support for the site, you can do so by clicking the Treasury button at the top of the site, or the Donations button on the front page. This is completely optional, and anything you want to give to the site will be greatly appreciated and put to good use.

Donations will only go towards the upkeep of Furry-Within, and nothing else. There will be complete transparency with donations, so if anyone has any questions as to how their money is being spent, then they can see simply what has been allocated where. And if you have further queries beyond that, you can ask me and I can provide further information.

And that's all for this update. Post here with comments, questions, concerns, or compliments. As always, I'm reachable through a variety of means, those being PM, E-Mail, Yahoo! Messenger, and frequently in the FW Chat if you wish to discuss matters privately.

*looks about a bit* love what you have done with the place. Your hard work is very much appreciated *has probably said that a couple of times already* I think it looks good, it looks unique in its own ways. Also, I see a photo gallery. I like it. Just one inquiry o.o Is there a specific image size that we cannot go over if we choose to upload, or is it like any other forum link post what have you that we make normally. Perhaps its an unnecessary question, I am just covering my bases in case I choose to upload any of my photos lol.

Anyhow. Love it, very much so. Thank you sthem for the nice and shiny gleam to the site  :P  8)
Title: Site Updates - Gaming Servers!
Post by: Azhtek on February 15, 2012, 12:14:06 PM
Okay, a bit of a new one this time. We now have available to us (to begin with, test the waters so to speak) a Minecraft server. It currently is an 8-slot Survival server with PvP and Flight enabled, and anyone can join.

The IP for the server is 68.232.163.87. The server itself is based in Dallas so in theory, people in the US shouldn't encounter too much lag.

Please post in this topic if you encounter any issues, such as technical difficulties, griefers, or severe latency issues.

Additionally, if people would like to list some games here that they'd like to see hosted on FW, such as Killling Floor which I've had suggested a few times now, let me know by posting here and I'll do what I cab.

I'm in the process of updating the forums to a newer version, something I've neglected to do for a little while. What this means is a temporary loss of functionality for some of the addons, such as portal (the front page), treasury, and a few other miscellaneous things.

I'm in the process of trialing some other mods right now. The new additions may or may not work correctly, so don't be surprised if you get an error.

Well it would seem that I've put into place a little battle mod (http://www.furry-within.com/index.php?action=battle;#battle_main). As of now, it's in the default state, so things might seem a little ugly, such as when you're fighting Muppets in the wild, but I'm going to spend the weekend messing around with this to improve quests, items, monsters, maps etc.

As of now, you can level up, quest, shop (at what is currently stocked in the shop) and battle with other users. I suggest starting with Libby (Spikey Vulpes) as she's gotten a headstart on you guys.

By the way, I'm a motherfuckin' raid boss. I'd suggest you lowbies not go for me just yet.

The battle section can be accessed at the top of the forum, or in the link provided in this post.

Battle system update.

So right now, I've created a public group called Battlers, which anyone can join or leave at any time. This group is there so that only people interested in playing are displayed in the game, which hinders the ability for people to snipe inactive members for easy resources.

To join this group, click this link (http://www.furry-within.com/index.php?action=profile;area=groupmembership) and then click Join on the Battler group. The battle tab should then be visible to you when you refresh your page and you can begin or continue the game.

If for some reason the link did not work, go to your profile, hover your mouse over Modify Profile, select Group Membership and join the group.

I'm in the process of adding content to the game, and during that time I've disabled PvP so that the people power-leveling right now won't stomp all over everyone else who is just getting started. I'm also working to balance the game out and introduce a better map, more quests, more random encounters, monsters, and soon campaigns that people of a certain level can embark on together.

More updates soon.

Update upon update upon update. Not related to the battle system right now though.

No, instead I've installed a new mod, which the creator has titled the Fanfic system (http://www.furry-within.com/index.php?action=fanfics). I'll be working to rename that soon, however its function will remain the same. It is a story submission system. This is here instead of just posting it to the forum for several reasons, which I shall post below.

1. This system can be categorised. I've put a few rudimentary categories in there so far just for testing, but these can be vast, and allow people to post to certain genres, as well as allow others to browse those genres.

2. It's easier to browse than a forum. Instead of topic being buried beneath the latest thing, people can instead choose how the navigate the system.

3. Rating system. Safe, Questionable, Explicit, Porn. People can, at a glance, decide on what content they want to view.

4. WYSIWYG text editor. What You See Is What You Get. This is far more effective as a means to writing on the fly, and it is an immediate response when editing because you don't have to click "preview".

Now, just because it's a new system doesn't mean the forums don't have a part in it. You can create threads and directly link them in to your story so that people can, with a single click, go to the thread and comment, critique, query. You'll see when submitting a story a Discussion Topic field. You just need the thread ID number and it'll redirect the reader once they click on the Discussion Topic link in your story.

For those wondering where the thread IDs can be found, I've put it in bold in the following link. http://www.furry-within.com/index.php/topic,39.0.html (http://www.furry-within.com/index.php/topic,39.0.html)

And then simply put it here when submitting a story: (http://puu.sh/68f8V.png)

Been a while since I've posted in here.

Well, I've been working for a decent number of hours today on a few small additions to the site here and there, ironing out some small bugs that have been on the To-Do list for a while, and discussing new features a few of you guys to get some feedback. So here's what I've added so far.

Chat additions:
-New commands to change your status. Check here for information (http://www.furry-within.com/index.php?action=pages;sa=3).
-Better (?) image linking in the chat. It now uses Lightbox to display images. And what that means is that if you decide to post a massive picture in the chat, instead it will show a thumbnail of the image until you click on it, at which point it will expand to its full size for you, and give you a direct link to the source of the picture. Let me know how it works for you guys and if any changes need to be made regarding thumbnail size, etc.
-Admins/Mods can now take over the chatbot and make it do horrendous shit to anyone we want.

I have a few more additions to the chat that I plan on introducing very soon, but it's nearly 5 AM at time of writing and they'll have to wait until I'm more coherent.

Site junk:
-Added in a suggestion box, and suggestion box forum board. There is now a link at the top of the page to go directly to where you can submit a suggestion, which will automatically generate a thread in the new forum board.
This is a public board where people can make a review suggestions and have their own input.

Trivial things:
-Rules are now linked in the top-right corner of the chat. The chat rules page is still a WIP but it contains the recent additions of commands.
-Added a suggestion box link to the top-right corner of the chat. For your own convenience.
-Added an "Message All Staff" option to the top-right corner of the chat. This is for use when you have an incident within the chat to report and no staff are currently present. It will allow you to easily send a site PM to myself, Rain, Kris, Fen and Nester. In the event that you do need to use this feature, it is recommended that you include text logs of the event in question. I'm currently working on setting up image attachments within site PMs so that people can attach screenshots of events, in such cases where text does not suffice.

/cast [Thread Necromancy]

Things I've added in.

Spoiler tags. Had them before, got them again. These are swanky tags, though, and work like this.
Put anything you want between the spoiler tags, and even add a title. As such.

Use the (http://www.furry-within.com/Themes/default/images/bbc/spoiler.gif) button at the top when posting to use it, or type it out yourself.

Dice roll. As anyone who is aware of the giveaway things knows, there's a dice roll function now. You use it like the chat one, selecting what you want to roll, up to a d1000, and you put that value between some [roll] tags. This can be done for you by clicking on the (http://www.furry-within.com/Themes/flagrantly_20g/images/bbc/roll.gif) button when posting. It's tamper-proof, so editing it will let everyone know you're a cheat. Also lets people know if you try to post the resulting code. So what's that mean?

[blockquote]Rolled 1d5 : 5, total 5[/blockquote]
(http://www.furry-within.com/Themes/flagrantly_20g/images/dice_warn.gif) This dice roll has been tampered with!
Rolled 1d6 : 3, total 3

It means you can't cheat.

Bookmarks. Someone mentioned that they want to be able to bookmark threads for later. So now you can. There's a new button at the top and bottom of every thread that's right next to the Reply button. Clicking on that adds it to your bookmarks. You can access your bookmarks by going to the Bookmarks link in the navbar at the top of the site. Hard to miss.

That's all for now, but if you have a suggestion for the site, click on the Suggestion Box (http://www.furry-within.com/index.php?action=form;n=1) link in the navbar and fill out the form.

Added functionality for more genders and shit, because of Cheeky being a cunt(boy). Right now, there's a couple transgender ones and an intersexed. The icons suck, so I'll try to source some better ones at some point or another, unless Cheeky wants to do some legwork for me.

Managed to get this working as well. Sexual orientation, which can be displayed on your profile. It can be found under Profile > Forum Profile, at the bottom of the page.

http://www.furry-within.com/index.php?action=profile;area=forumprofile

Comes with handy little picture beside your orientation.

When you don't select an orientation, for some reason a blank field moves to be beneath your email section. Not sure what's up with that. Oh well, it's not a big deal.
Title: September Site Updates - Chat Changes & Public Events
Post by: Azhtek on September 23, 2016, 10:10:26 AM
Been a while since I posted here. Suppose that's indicative.

Anyway. Some things are going to be changing and I thought I'd give people a heads up. There's one change coming to the chat, and a hopefully large amount of changes coming to everywhere else.

Chat Changes
First, the chat. And let me start off by saying that this is just temporary, to try and get a reading on how much this kind of thing is liked.
So, here it is. Starting on Monday 26th (for the US. So probably 27th for international users), the main channel of the chat will be primarily RP. I'm going to be doing a write-up and a 3D mock-up of the club so that people can read and see what it's about. This information will become available at around the same time as this change.
Out of character talk (OoC) will be minimised and if it gets to be too invasive, users or staff can ask those persons to move to another channel, or take it to whispers. (Users, please don't be dicks about it.)

The thinking behind this is that, a lot of the time, we have OoC dominating the chat, even when people are trying to RP. I've had more than a few remarks that it's distracting, ruins the atmosphere etc when someone starts bringing up politics, or some other boner-killing topic while they're trying to have some light RP.

It's also a means to try and encourage people to just RP more. Simple as that.

It should also be stated that sex in the main channel is still not permitted. If your RP starts to head in that direction, staff or other users can politely ask you to take it to whispers or another room.

I feel as though I've gone on about this long enough to drive the point home, but if people want further elaboration, please post in this thread.

Public Events

The next change is also of an experimental nature. Put simply, public events. These are open events that anyone is welcome to join, encompassing an array of activities.

Such events as:
Roleplay events centred around a theme. This could be a location, such as a bar, magic garden, space station, or an event, such as an end-of-the-world situation, or a whodunnit mystery. These events are perhaps the most open to people as it just requires them to be in the chat and RPing. It would be up to the players to determine how the goings on unfold.

Jon and I are currently discussing the concept of drop-in/drop-out D&D games. These are casual one-night D&D games which anyone can join. We would provide pre-made characters to those who don't have the time or experience to make one on their own, and we would provide advice where available to those unfamiliar with the system. Due to the desire to keep such a system straight-forward to accommodate the more casual nature, we would likely be using 5th edition rules.

This one is rather self-explanatory. I think we've all played this game. This game is played on a third-party website and only requires a browser. It's a delightfully offensive game. I don't believe that this game has a realistic player limit on the site we use.

Another idea Jon and I had was to use Tabletop Simulator. We are aware that a good number of people have the software, and we'd like to put it to use. We have a huge variety of games available, though one that came up was Magic; the Gathering. We would provide pre-made decks to players and draw up a ladder. This would ensure an even playing field. Such events wouldn't be limited to MtG, this is just being used as an example.

Not sure I need to explain this one. People get on Discord and we just shoot the shit. Talking on voice is different to talking in the chat, it might simply be a pleasant change of pace.
None of this is set in stone just yet, but when I decide on when the first even is going to be, I'll be making it very well-known.

Well, that's all for now. I strongly encourage anyone with opinions on this update (positive and negative, I can take it) to post below. Have a discussion. Feedback, people, I need it.
Title: Re: Site Updates
Post by: Azhtek on September 26, 2016, 12:33:59 PM
All right. Update time.

So, good news, bad news. Bad news is that creating a 3D layout of the EoTC is taking a little longer than I predicted. Technical issues beyond my control are responsible.

Good news is that the new policy is now active. Here's what that means specifically.

The main channel of the chat (The End of Time Club) is now primarily an RP channel. This means that it's asked that you're in character whilst in the channel. Out of Character, or OoC, talk is by no means banned outright, however if your OoC talk starts to bother others, they may POLITELY ask you to please either take it to whispers, or to another channel.

A description of the chat has been provided, and can be viewed here (http://www.furry-within.com/index.php?action=pages;sa=4). The Monday deadline was probably a bit too close for me, so things are kind of all over the place for me right now, but I should have everything in order within the next few days. I'll post to this thread when I've got all the info in one place.

Anyway, the chat channel list has also (temporarily) been pruned to just IC and OoC chat.

These changes are on a trial run. If, after a couple of weeks, these changes are viewed favourably, they'll stay. If not, they'll be reverted.

enjoy

I've added a few old functions from back in the day.

/lfrp will set your status to Looking for RP
/ooc will set your status to Out of Character
/back will revert any changes to your username.

Please note that these will revert your username to the one you log in with, and not the nickname you've changed to.

If anyone has any other recommendations for status texts, or even chat features that they'd like to see, post them here and I'll consider it if it's at all possible.

Would there be any way to make an announcement by FW_Command when people set their status to afk? Might end up being too spammy, not sure. But it could be nice rather than talking to someone for a while, then looking up to see that their username has changed to afk. Just a QoL change, not a huge deal.

I've added in some extra profile fields that link to external sites. Some of them display within threads, as you can see on mine, and others are only viewable within profiles.

Due to the way the addon works, I wasn't able to get the Discord and Skype fields to not be links. As such, they just link to their respective websites, despite showing the info. So you'll just need to copy/paste stuff like we used to do in the old days.

I can add in pretty much anything if people want other places. Right now, there's Twitter, YouTube, DeviantArt, FurAffinity, Twitch, Discord and Skype. I could add in lots myself, but I'm not sure how many would be used, and I'd rather not clutter things up.

Additionally, I've added in a special diceroll feature to the chat. In preparation for upcoming events, there's now a GM diceroll function. It functions exactly like the improved diceroll that we've had for a while, with the exception that it only shows you the diceroll result. It can be used by typing /gm for a standard D20 roll, or by adding regular diceroll arguments after it.

For example:

/gm +4
/gm +9/2
/gm 3d20+3

Updated chat guidelines within the site rules section. Please familiarise yourselves with these guidelines and let any of the staff know if you need clarification on these rules.
